Our vision has always been rooted in creating an experience, not just accommodation. Surrounded by history and inspired by timeless European charm, we built a private castle retreat where you can slow down, reconnect, and savor elegance in every moment.
Originally crafted in Châteauesque style between 1890–1892 for industrialist James Hervey Sternbergh, the Stirling Mansion reflects the grandeur of European estates.
Inspired by that legacy, we’ve preserved its majestic ambiance from the grand staircase to the curated artwork, infusing each space with thoughtful warmth and historic allure.
The mansion was designed by celebrated Philadelphia architect Theophilus P. Chandler, founding head of the University of Pennsylvania’s school of architecture, and named after Stirling Castle in Scotland, whose views the Sternbergh family loved. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980 and anchors Reading’s Centre Park Historic District.
Music has always filled these halls: Gertrude Sternbergh, a Juilliard-trained pianist and the last of the family to live at Stirling, hosted hundreds of concerts here. For nearly three decades the estate then welcomed travelers as the beloved Stirling Guest Hotel and The Gables — a legacy of hospitality we are proud to carry forward.
